A quiet practice,
made on film.
Based in Shanghai. Working slowly, on medium format, between editorial commission and long-form documentary.
Chen Liangzhe (b. 1984, Hangzhou) is a photographer and visual artist based in Shanghai. Working primarily in medium format on film, his practice moves between editorial commission and long-form documentary — quiet, considered pictures made over return visits rather than single assignments. His recurring subjects are residue and aftermath: the towns the reservoir left behind, the institutions quietly disappearing, the empty hours of cities that never quite sleep.
His editorial work has appeared in Monocle, The New York Times Magazine, Wallpaper*, Kinfolk and AnOther, and he has made campaigns for Apple, Hermès, Loewe and Bank of China. He prints all of his own work, by hand, in a small darkroom in the former French Concession — a discipline he describes, only half-jokingly, as the part of the job that keeps the rest honest.
陈良哲 studied photography at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and, briefly, printmaking at the Royal College of Art in London. He is represented for editorial commission by Studio CLZ, and is available for select long-form projects in greater China, Japan and Europe.
